Gold Mohur of Jahangir Sold for INR 1, 20,000

Mirza Nur-ud-din Beig Muhammed Khan Salim was popularly known by his imperial name Salim or Jahangir. He was the fourth Mughal emperor who ruled between 1605 – 1627 CE. The meaning of the word Jahangir is ‘Conqueror of the world’. Among all the Mughal Emperors, he was undoubtedly the greatest patron of fine arts. He was the first Mughal Emperor in India who minted coins with his wife Nurjahan’s name inscribed on them.

Jahangir took the keen interest in his coinage. Coins issued by him are the best example of Mughal currency. The design and calligraphy on the coin make his coinage more attractive. He issued posthumous coins in the name of his father ‘Akbar'. Some of the silver coins issued by him have the name ‘Salim' inscribed on it.

This gold mohur minted at Patna during the 14th year of his reign was sold for INR 1, 20,000 at Todywalla Auction. The obverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Nur-Al-Din Jahangir Shah Akbar Shah’. And the reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Ilahi Month Azar, Zarb Patna, Regnal year 14 at the top and Hijri date 1029 at the bottom.
