100 Years of Canadian Hockey Team to be Celebrated on Coins

The Royal Canadian Mint would be releasing a circulating dollar coin to celebrate 100 years of Canada’s Hockey team, later in 2017.

The reverse would feature the logo of the Toronto Maple Leafs, two crossed hockey sticks, one - a classic type and the other - a modern one. Other inscriptions include the years 1917 and 2017; CANADA and DOLLAR. A laser mark maple leaf is depicted inside a maple leaf within a circle. The design field has beading borders. The obverse will feature the Susanna Blunt portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Maple Leafs were founded in 1917, named as Toronto initially, later renamed as Toronto Arenas. It was named Toronto St. Patricks in 1919 under new ownership. After the club was purchased by Conn Smythe in 1927, the club was renamed - the Maple Leafs.

RCM had issued a circulating commemorative dollar coin for Montreal Canadians in 2009. the Maple Leafs Coin would be the second such coin to celebrate a hockey team by RCM.
