At the end of the Second World War, Britain was drained by this conflict and was not able to keep a hold on its commonwealths, especially its jewel - India. They decided to quit India; therefore they released most of the freedom fighters and political prisoners from Indian National Congress (INC) and All-India Muslim League who were arrested during Quit India Movement.

Due to this decision, a cabinet Mission of British came to India to assist and formulate manifestos and form the government. Today seemly, on 2nd September 1946, an Interim government of India was formed from the newly elected Constituent Assembly.

The member of this Interim government consists Viceroy and commander-in-chief of Britain, Indian National Congress and from All-India Muslim League. This body was formed to assist the establishment and switch of British India into the Independent Union of India and the Dominion of Pakistan. This government also drafted the Constitution of India and led India post-Independence.

The prime mister power of this government was granted to the vice-president of this INC, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru until Independence. Till 1947, British India remained under the sovereignty of the United Kingdom but the interim government proceeded to establish a diplomatic relation with other countries.

After Independence, this interim government was dissolved and a new Government of India came into position. The above image depicts an Indian map which came into existence due to this interim government. This definitive stamp depicting India’s map was issued by India Post in 1957.
