Finnish Stamps Celebrate a Museum Dedicated to an Iconic Fictional Character

2017-08-31 Thu

On May 24th, Finland released a booklet of stamps celebrating the first and only museum dedicated to fictional characters named Moomins. These characters were given life by writer and illustrator Tove Jansson (1914-2001). The museum opened in June 2017 in Tampere Hall, Finland.

These fictional characters lead an adventurous life in Moominvalley, one with nature. They have white and roundish trolls with large snouts. The museum showcases drawings and paintings of Moomin by Jansson and three-dimensional tableaux of different Moomin scenes created by Jansson and Tuulikki Pietila. Designs represent the evolution of Moomins, from the scenes of Comet in Moominland, the second Moomin book that was published in 1946; The Exploits of Moominpappa, 1950; Moominland Midwinter, 1957; and Moominpappa at Sea, 1965. The nondenominated stamps have a symbolic globe, stating that they can be used to pay international rate.
