Fiji’s National Bird Collared lory on New Titanium Coins

2017-08-29 Tue

Pobjoy Mint is going to release special silver and titanium coins for Fiji featuring the collared lory which is the national bird of the country. The reverse features two collared lorys on tree branches. The obverse depicts the Fijian coat of arms made of a shield with the Cross of St. George, Fijian warriors, a canoe and a lion.

The collared lory is also locally known as kula. It is a rainforest bird which has adapted to urban landscapes like no other species. It has greenish upper parts, bright scarlet chest and a purple crown on the face. The males are generally found in more vibrant colours than the females.

With every strike, titanium reacts in a different way, making each coin unique. Another unique feature of the metal causes a lined effect on the coins. The 28.28 grams silver coin has a mintage limit of 2,000 pieces and costs $65. The 10 grams titanium coin has a mintage limit of 7,500 pieces and costs $59.
