Gold Tanka of Muhammad Bin Tughluq

Muhammad bin Tughluq is one of the most interesting and remarkable rulers of the Tughluq dynasty. He succeeded his father Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq. He was well versed in several languages like Arabic, Turkish and Sanskrit. He was a knowledgeable person with deep knowledge in philosophy, mathematic and medicine.He had issued various numbers of coins. His coinage is divided into different classes. Coins which were struck in the memory of his father, coins with his own name; coins with his own name which were struck both by normal and token issues, and the coins struck in the names of ‘Abbasid Caliphs’.
This gold tanka, minted in Hazrat Delhi, weighs around 10.9g was sold for INR 46,000 at Todywalla Auction held in Mumbai on 19th April 2013. The obverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Al Sultan Al Azam Ala Al Dunya Wa'ldin Abu'l Muzaffar Muhammad Shah Al Sultan’. And the reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Sikandar al-Sani Yamin al-khilafah Nasir amir al-mominin’ within the circle, mint name and date written in the margin, both mint name, and date is not clearly visible on the coin.
