Gold Nazarana half Mohur of Datia

2017-08-17 Thu

Datia, the north-central state of India during British rule, was governed by the Maharajas related to Orchha royal family. It was established in 1735 by the Bhagwan Das, son of Narsingh Dev of Orchha royal house. Like many Indian kingdoms, this state also came under British control after signing the treaty with the East India Company. During the British dominion, this state still had its own hammered and medallic coinage.

The above-shown gold Nazarana half Mohur comes under medallic coinage of the Datia Princely State. It was issued during the reign of Maharaja Govind Singh. The obverse of this coin depicts bust of Maharaja Govind Singh with a continuous legend in Roman script within the dotted border. The reverse of this coin depicts the court of arms of Datia State within the dotted border.

This coin is a beautiful master piece and it's not surprising that it's about extremely fine and very rare variety. It was sold for INR 2, 10,000 by Classical Numismatics Gallery on 12th August 2017 in Ahmadabad coins and currency fare 2017.
