Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip on Latest Pobjoy Mint Coins

2017-08-17 Thu

Queen Elizabeth has given exclusive permission to Pobjoy Mint for releasing a coin featuring a dual-effigy of her and Prince Philip together. It is the first time ever that such a portrait has been used on a coin.

The design on the reverse is taken from a 2016 portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip at the State Opening of Parliament. 10,000 Cupro Nickel and 2,000 Proof Sterling Silver coins will be released for Ascension Island.

Prince Philip met 13-year-old Queen Elizabeth at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth in 1939 for the first time. They started communicating through letters and finally got engaged in 1947 after the Queen’s 21st birthday. They got married in November 1947 and 2017 would be their Platinum Wedding Anniversary.

The Queen was crowned five years after her marriage since her father, King George VI died when he was 56-year-old. The couple has always been committed to their royal duties with a sense of humour and affection for each other.

The 500-year-old traditional State Opening of Parliament ceremony marks the parliamentary session or is conducted after a general election. During this ceremony, the Queen wears the Parliament Robe of State and the Imperial State crown.

The mintage limit of the 28.28 g .925 Silver and CuNi coin is 2000, and 10,000 respectively.
