2017-08-17 Thu

On 26th August, an online auction by Early American History Auctions Inc is going to offer a Continental Currency $20 note dated 10th May 1775, graded Very Fine 35, printed on rectangular and marbled border paper provided by Benjamin Franklin at an estimate of $10,000 to $12,000.

Many English-made coppers that were circulated in 1794 and 1795, were distributed by New York merchants Talbot, Allum & Lee. The 1794 token features the text ONE CENT, but it does not appear on the 1795 token. The obverse features an allegorical figure holding a pole with a Liberty cap. The reverse illustrates a three-masted ship along with the inscription NEW YORK.

The common text on the 1794 edge is PAYABLE AT THE STORE OF while that on the 1795 token is WE PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ONE CENT. There are only three or four known 1794 tokens that come without an edge inscription. The offered coin at the auction is graded Extremely Fine 45 and has a plain edge.
