2017-08-11 Fri
A new coin was added to the popular Pobjoy Whales & Dolphins set featuring the Southern Right Whale. The coin is issued for British Antarctic Territory as these whales are found in the oceans surrounding this island. 10,000 in Uncirculated Cupro Nickel versions and 2,000 in Proof Sterling Silver versions have been released. The obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.The Southern Right Whale spends time and feeds near Antarctica during summers. They migrate to the north in winters but some go to the Sub-Antarctic regions as well. Experts believe that the population of these whales is close to 10,000.
An adult female can grow up to 17m in length. These whales are identifiable by callouses on its head, broad backs with no dorsal fins and long arching mouths. They form strong maternal and family bonds. They follow a set pattern while migrating and go back to birthing spots. They are curious by nature and approach boats on the surface. They are particularly known for ‘Tail Sailing’ where they extend tails from the water and curve them to catch the wind. They remain in a vertical position for a long time.
The coins come in a special packaging along with a Certificate of Authenticity.
