2017-08-07 Mon

The Congress authorizes the US Mint to produce commemorative coins that celebrate American people, places, events, and institutions during every session. A part of the sale of these commemorative coins is a surcharge that goes to various organizations and projects.

The modern commemorative coin program began in 1982, after which, $506,301,189 USD has been raised in surcharges for various causes. A bill has been passed for authorizing the US Mint to produce a commemorative coin to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of The American Legion (1919-2019). The funds raised will be utilised for The American Legion’s veteran support programs.

The American Legion is a wartime veteran service organization with over two million members and 13,000 posts in the U.S. The organisation helps veterans and their families access the benefits like healthcare and disability compensation for their injuries. It also offers education and training for contributing members of society after their military service.
