2017-08-05 Sat

Symbolism is nothing but symbols which represent certain ideas or philosophies. They are seen on the various archaeological artefacts.

Swastika is one of the symbols which have remained an integral part of Indian culture even today. On each and every auspicious occasion in India, we see people drawing a swastika on the entrance of their houses.

The word swastika is derived from Sanskrit which means ‘auspicious’.

In India, we trace this symbol back to the Indus Valley around 3000 BCE. Do you know swastika has been featured on Ancient Indian Coins as well?
It is seen on the coins of Erikachha, Kuninda, Kaushambi, Satavahana, etc. They are also depicted on coins of Parataraja. Parataraja was a dynasty ruling in the areas of Balochistan from 100 AD to 300 AD. The obverse usually depicts the bust of the ruler and the reverse has a swastika at the centre with Brahmi/ Kharoshthi legend around it. To know more about these coins in detail click here.
