Coins of Kuninda

Kuninda was a kingdom ruling in the region of the central Himalaya from 200 BCE to 300 CE. They were the neighbors and contemporaries of the Yaudheya and Adumbara. With the rise of the Guptas in 400 CE, Kunindas disappeared from the political history of northern India.

According to Allan, the Kuninda coinage can be divided into two groups: One issued in the 1st Century BCE and the other around 2nd Century CE. Their silver coins are one of the beautiful coins of Ancient India. They are very decorative with many symbols seen on the obverse as well as reverse. The given coin in the picture is a silver drachm weighing around 2.7 grams. Deer facing right, goddess holding a lotus to the right; Brahmi legend ‘Rajno Kunidasa Amoghabhutisa Maharajasa’ around on obverse. The reverse depicts indradhvaja, swastika, nandipada, tree in railing, six arched hill and river below; Kharoshthi legend around.
