RBI to Issue New Rs. 20 Notes Soon

2017-07-31 Mon

The RBI has revealed that the new Rs. 20 banknotes will be similar to the Mahatma Gandhi Series that was issued earlier, in terms of design. The new notes will have the inset letter 'S' in both the number panels along with the signature of RBI Governor Urjit Patel. The earlier banknotes will continue to be legal tender.

The numerals in both the number panels will be in ascending size from left to right; the alphanumeric characters in the prefix are of the same size. Offset printing is used instead of intaglio printing. The colour of the reverse remains the same while that of the obverse will become a bit lighter due to the removal of raised printing. New Rs. 20 notes of the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005 were issued in 2016 without a latent image showing the denomination in the vertical band on the right side of Mahatma Gandhi's portrait. This image was visible only when the banknote was held horizontally at eye level in the earlier versions. This feature is removed. The year of printing will be on the reverse and there are no changes on the reverse.
