The Mumbai mint, a unit of Security Printing & Minting Corporation of India Ltd (SPMCIL), has been manufacturing these commemorative coins apart from circulation coins. In 2016, the mint had come up with only one commemorative coin themed on Centenary of Banaras Hindu University. But the year 2015 proved to be quite fruitful for collectors as three commemorative coins were released. The first coin was released on International Yoga Day, the second on the 125th birth anniversary of B R Ambedkar and the third was for the Golden Jubilee of Indo Pak War 1965.
In 2014, coins were issued to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru. While in 1972, coins were issued to mark the 25th year of India’s independence.
