The Great Fire of London that occurred in 1666 had a disastrous effect on the city. A huge undated gold medal which was probably struck in 1966, to mark the 300th anniversary of this fateful day, is being offered by Stack’s Bowers Galleries from 2nd to 4th August in Denver along with the ANA World’s Fair of Money.

The obverse of the Mint State .9167 fine, 409.9 grams gold medal features the Great Seal of King Charles II and a picture of London before the fire. The reverse depicts a phoenix coming out of burning buildings over the Thames. Other inscriptions on the reverse include “THE GREAT FIRE OF LONDON / 1666”.

Signed by J. T. & Co., with the required hallmarks, the medal is edge numbered 48. Only 100 such medals were struck. The offered coin comes in an original presentation case along with a certificate of authenticity and has an estimate of $10,000 to $14,000.
