Rare 1982-D and 1983-D Lincoln Memorial Cents to be Auctioned

2017-07-14 Fri

A Small Date 1982-D Lincoln Memorial Cent was discovered by a Minnesota collector in November 2016. After getting the coin examined by various experts, it was confirmed that the sparsely circulated once-cent nickel coin was unique and rare.

Copper-plated zinc coins or "Zincolns" were in circulation in 1982. The only known example cent type will be offered by Stack's Bowers on 3rd August at the Rarities Night Session. The coin was graded AU58BN by NGC and termed it as a Discovery Coin. The current bid for the coin is $1,100 USD.

The second major error coin was produced in the next year - a 1983-D cent struck on a bronze planchet, graded PCGS AU55. A copper alloy planchet that was used in 1982 was mixed accidentally with copper-plated zinc coins that were used to produce standard cent blanks that year.

The 1983-D error coin is as desirable as the 1982-D error coin. No other such error coins were found in 30 years of circulation, making them extremely rare. The current Bid for this coin is $11,000 USD.
