Shah Jahan Gold Mohur Sold For INR 3, 50,000

Shah Jahan was the fifth Mughal emperor of India. He was one of the greatest rulers of the Mughal Empire. He was born as Prince ‘Khurram’ to the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in the year 1592 AD. The meaning of the word Shah Jahan is ‘King of the world’. He is best known for ‘Taj Mahal’ which he build in the memory of his beloved wife ‘Mumtaz Mahal’. Another one of his famous creations is the Peacock throne. His reign is also described as ‘Golden Age’ of Mughal Empire.

Shah Jhan also issued an ilahi coin like Akbar and Jahangir. Ilahi coins issued by him have Kalima in the first two lines, mint name in the third line and name of the month on the fourth line on the obverse side. The reverse side of the coin is inscribed with name and title on the king with the date. He has also issued coins with the title Sahib-i-qiran Sani.

This gold mohur minted in Akbarabad, weighs around 10.8g was sold for INR 3, 50,000 at Todywalla Auction held in Mumbai on 29th June 2017. The obverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Shihab Al-Din Muhammad Sahib Qiran Shah Jahan Badshah Gazi and mint name Akbarabad in the fourth lines. The reverse of the coin is inscribed with ‘Kalima’ within a quatrefoil, with the name of the caliph with their respective epithet around.
