2017-07-12 Wed
Sale of Proof 2017-W American Eagle platinum $100 coins began on 6th July. 5,230 coins out of the total mintage of 10,000 coins, were sold on the first day itself. The price of each coin was $1,300 which is based on the standard pricing grid for numismatic products, set by the US mint. The pricing could also vary with time depending upon the market trends. The coin marks the 20th anniversary of the American Eagle platinum coin series. There was an ordering restriction of one coin per household.
The coin features Thomas D. Rogers Sr.'s Eagle Above America design. It was first used on the reverse of the Proof and bullion American Eagle coins in 1997. Thematic designs were replaced every year from 1998 onwards. Rogers’ design though, remained unchanged on the bullion platinum coins. The obverse features Sculptor-Engraver John Mercanti’s Liberty design. This design was used for the American Eagle platinum coin series on both versions of all the platinum coins, ever since they were introduced in 1997. In 2006, an Uncirculated 1-ounce platinum version was released.
