Who comes to our rescue when we are ill?Of course the Doctor! Doctors have been saving lives since centuries now with their knowledge about medicines and human anatomy.
In India, 1st July is celebrated as the National Doctor’s Day… But do you know the reason behind it?
In 1991, the Government of India officially declared that 1st of July will be celebrated as National Doctors day in honour of the most famous Indian physician Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy (Dr. B C Roy), who shares his birth and death anniversary on the same day.
Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy had completed his medical graduation from Calcutta and returned to India in 1911 after completing his MRCP and FRCS degrees in London. He started off as a physician in India, in the same year. He was honoured with the great Indian civilian award, Bharat Ratna on 4th of February in 1961. He was also the second Chief Minister of West Bengal.
Doctor’s Day is observed with the aim of creating awareness regarding the importance of a doctor’s profession. It reminds of the doctor’s responsibility towards patients.
India Post issued a 50 Paisa stamp to celebrate the National Doctor’s Day. It depicts the portrait of Bidhan Chandra Roy.
Did you know? Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi, (31 March 1865 – 26 February 1887) was one of the first Indian female physicians. She was the first female of Indian origin to study and graduate with a degree in medicine in the United States.
Doctors throughout the world are saving millions of lives. They are the life givers! Because medicine can cure, but a good doctor’s inspirational words can give us strength to fight from within…
So today’s day, let our doctor realise what they mean to us!
Happy Doctor’s Day… Stay healthy!
