Rare Carson City Mint $20 Gold Coins to be Auctioned

The 11th Annual Summer FUN Convention is going to the hosted by Florida United Numismatists at Orange County Convention Center from 6th to 8th July in Orlando. Heritage Auctions would be offering a wide range of coins at the sale during the convention.

The Reno Cache will include over 50 Carson City Mint Coronet double eagles. Two out the six finest 1874-CC double eagles offered are graded About Uncirculated 58 with a green CAC sticker.

A total of 115,085 double eagles were struck at the Carson City Mint in 1874. Most of these coins were circulated. They are generally found in Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated grades, with low-end Mint State examples occupying the very top end of the grade.

One of the AU-58 CAC examples offered has orange-gold surfaces with original mint lustre. They also have some minor contact marks for the grade. The other coin offered is a near-Mint example with dusky steel-blue toning. They are uncleaned pieces stored in vaults for many decades.

An 1874-CC Coronet double eagle graded AU Details, Bent is another highlight. The coin has a slight bend but has natural surfaces and mint lustre. An 1885 Indian Head gold $3 coin, graded Mint State 63 is also offered which had a low mintage limit of 801 pieces and were struck with a lot of care at Philadelphia Mint. Many exhibit proof-like surfaces. The coin has sharp details design and orange-gold surfaces with minor contact signs. An 1886 gold $3 piece, graded PCGS Proof 64+ Deep Cameo is the finest known of the 90 surviving examples out of a total mintage of 142.
