World Refugee Day
2017-06-20 Tue
You sleep peacefully in your homeland and one fine day you are forced to leave that… Just a thought of it sounds like a nightmare right? There are innumerable people who become refugees every year. Speaking of the numbers, 4 million Syrian refugees were hosted by Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan. Lebanon hosts 1.1 million refugees, making up around a quarter of the population. Turkey hosts nearly 2 million, and Jordan 630,000.
These numbers are not small. Observing this as a sign of an alarm World Refugee Day is observed every year on 20th of June, in order to raise the public awareness about refugee’s situations throughout the world. And also to support millions of families all over the world who have lost their homes and dear ones because of violence or war. General Assembly of United Nations took the initiatives to honor refugees with the courage to face the problems after losing homes due to conflict or violence and their contributions to their communities.
Everyone should get basic the necessities, be it in your country or others! Refugees should be provided with the variety of lifesaving assistance, safety, and protection by the government agencies and organizations.
So, today we want to bring to your attention that refugees should be taken as an asset and strength of the country and not as the burden. This day is celebrated to remind people about the failures of an international community or home conflicts which forced lots of families to leave their home and go another place to save their life. Our goal of celebrating this event is increasing the public awareness among the common public because ‘Refugees are not terrorists, they are often the first victims of terrorism’.
Various countries like Malaysia, Italy, USA, Sudan, etc took initiatives to celebrate this day by issuing commemorative stamps. The given green and red color postage stamp were printed in Federation of Malaya with the image of the World Refugee symbol to commemorate World Refugee Year 1960 having the face value of 30 and 12 cents respectively.
So let us accept refugees with our open hearts because humanity comes before anything!
