Princely State of Sailana
2017-06-16 Fri
The concept of Princely State for British was quite complex in terms of oriental potentates and imperial collaboration. Forty percent of the Indian population was governed by the local rulers or Kings of Princely States. The periodic shift of British policy according to their own interest did little help to the administrative abilities of the Prince. This Princely States survived until India attained Independence. There were total 565 Princely states on the Indian subcontinent. Today we are going to discuss a Princely state located central-west India called Sailana.
This state was founded by Jai Singh's successor in 1730. Due to its small size and vulnerability, Sailana obliged to become a tributary of Sindhia to ensure its survival. Later in 1840 and 1860, the one-third state revenue went to British for the support of British troop in the region.
The above-shown copper ¼ Anna was circulated in the reign of Jaswant Singh. The obverse of this coin depicts King Edward VII portrait. The reverse side of this coin depicts face value, date and states name.
This state was ruled by the Rathore Rajput clan. The last Raja Dilip Singh signed the accession of Sailana state into the Union of India on 15th August 1948.
