Coins of Bahmani Sultan Muhammad Shah I

2017-03-02 Thu

Muhammad Shah I was a sultan of Bahmani Kingdom, he succeeded his father Ala Al-Din Bahman Shah. The Bahmani Kingdom was the first independent Islamic kingdom in South India. It was one of the great medieval Indian kingdoms. The Kingdom was founded after Bahman Shah successfully revolted against Muhammad Bin Tughluq of the Delhi Sultanate.

Muhammad Shah I issued coins in gold, silver and copper. In gold, he had issued coins both in Dinar and Tanka standard. His gold dinar and silver tanka bears legend ‘Al-Ahd wa’l Zaman Hami Millat Rasul Al-Rahman’ meaning ‘Sultan of the time and the age, the defender of the faith of the prophet of the Merciful One’. The reverse of his gold dinar has the legend ‘Muhammad Hasan Bahmani’; ‘Hasan’ is the pre-accession name of his father. One of the one-sixth tanka has the date 778; this is probably a posthumous issue.

His silver tanka was listed for INR 2000-2500 at Oswal Auction. This coin was minted in Hadrat Ahsanabad, which weighs around 10.8-11g. The obverse of the coin reads as ‘Sultan Al –‘Ahd Wa’l Zaman Hami Millat Rasul Al-Rahman’ and reverse of the coin reads as ‘Abu’l Muzaffar Muhammad Shah Bin Bahman Shah Al-Sultan within a square with date 765 and mint name written in the margin.
