A policeman named PC David Cockle found £15,000 worth gold coins at Norfolk field with his metal detector. He was dismissed for cheating the landowner by keeping the proceeds of the sale of coins. Cockle had agreed to a 50:50 split with the farmer if anything valuable was found.

He did not attend the hearing and apologised with a written statement presented by the Police Federation. He will be sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court next month.

The 10 coins found were known as Merovingian Tremissis, only about 100 of the coins, made in France and Europe in the early 7th Century, have been found in modern-day Britain. After the fall of the Roman Empire till the 7th Century, coins were not used until Tremissis was introduced.
