The Supreme Court had made flag burning a legally accepted form of expression in 1989. The American Flag symbol of the Stars and Stripes was adopted in June 1777. The Union troops carried the flag into battle during the civil War and the flag bearer was shot many times. But the flag was passed on to another brave soldier.

A Civil War token, Fuld 209/414 reflects the love for the flag with a spelling mistake “SPOOT” instead of SPOT. The complete inscription reads “If anybody attempts to tear it down, shoot him on the spoot”. The inscription on the other side which also features the American flag reads “The flag of our nation - 1863”
