Coil Stamps of Peru

2017-01-18 Wed

Peru experimented with an issue of coil stamps in 1928 which was released in 1929. The stamps featured designs of Peru’s then-current series of definitive stamps that were first released in 1924.

The two denominations included the 2-centavo Jose Tejada Rivadeneyra stamp for the Postal Union of the Americas and Spain (UPAE), and the 10c Augusto B. Leguia stamp for the domestic and UPAE letter rate. 20,000 2c coil stamps and 50,000 10c stamps were only issued.

The coil stamps were delivered in rolls of 500 by American Bank Note with perforated gauge 14 horizontally unlike sheet stamps with perf 12.

The stamps were printed in sheets like usual, then cut into vertical strips of 10 and stuck together to make up a roll.

The stamps were to be sold by machines from Great Britain which never reached Peru. Only some of the coil stamps were used. Such stamps are really rare and can fetch you a good amount.
