Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Dore, born on 6th January 1832 was a renowned French artist, printmaker, illustrator, and sculptor. He could create vast dreamlike scenes highly sought after by romantic academicians.

He produced weekly lithographs for a Journal- Pour Rire (1848-51). He worked primarily with wood engravings and had employed more than 40 woodcutters; he produced over 90 books. One of his best was an edition of the Oeuvres de Rabelais (1854), Les Contes Drolatiques of Balzac (1855), the Large Folio Bible (1866), and the Inferno of Dante (1861). He also painted many large compositions of a religious or historical character.

This 4 francs commemorative stamp of Gustav Dore was issued on 20th June 1983. It has an image of an illustration of Bluebeard done by Gustave. This stamp has deservingly won the Betemps Grand Prix de l'Art Philatelique.
