The Heritage Auctions of Banknotes from 4th to 10 January in Fort Lauderdale will be offering some unique items for sale. One of them is a $5,000 1934 Federal Reserve Note PMG Choice About Unc 58 which was never auctioned publically before. Schmalhausen selected this $5,000 note for his own private collection. The paper is attractive and original with a deep embossing of the overprint.

The Northfield National Bank was almost robbed on 7th September 1876 by the James-Younger Gang. Citizens came together to protect their town and the bank from this robbery attempt. Some gang members were killed, some were wounded and some were captured. Frank and Jesse James eluded capture. Cole and Bob Younger were imprisoned in Stillwater.

The bank was robbed because of Jesse Ames, the signer on this note. Aames' son, Adelbert Ames, served in the Union Army during the Civil War and later became the Governor of Mississippi. The James-Younger gang consisted of Confederate soldiers and the robbery was attempted as an act of revolt against these two men who had an interest in the bank.

The auction will also be offering the Original Bechtel Album for Confederate Notes in excellent condition with Many Rarities. The original C.H. Bechtel Confederate Currency album contains Confederate rarities like all four of the Montgomery notes, the T27, and the T35 “Indian Princess”.
