Ala Al din Mahmud Shah I (AH 839-873; AD 1439-1469) was the sultan of Malwa. Malwa was founded by Dilawar Khan Gauri, who was the governor of Delhi Sultanate in Malwa.
Ala Al Din Mahmud Shah I had issued coins in gold, Silver, copper and billion in various denominations. His Silver tankas of “Sikandar al-thani” types have two varieties. One in which the obverse legend is in a plain area and reverse legend is within a circle; and the other, were both obverse and reverse legends are within a double square.
This silver tanka minted in Hadrat Shadiabad, weighs around 11 g, the obverse of the coin reads “Al-Sultan Al-Azam Ala Al-Dunya Wa Al-Din Khalji Abul Muzaffar Mahmud Shah Khallada Allah Khilafatahu” written on the plain surface. And the reverse of the coin reads as “Sikandar Al-Thani Yamin Al-Khilafa Nasir Amir Al Muminin” written within the circle, mint name and date is written in a margin. The date is not clearly visible on the coin. This is a rare coin.
