On the auspicious occasion of Diwali, the festival of lights, prosperity and new beginnings, we celebrate India's rich numismatic heritage through a remarkable gold coin of the Vijayanagara Empire. Traditionally associated with the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, Diwali symbolises wealth, abundance and good fortune. Reflecting these auspicious themes, this beautiful coin features Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi seated together, representing divine blessings, prosperity and protection.
The Vijayanagara Empire, founded in 1336 CE by the brothers Harihara I and Bukka Raya I, emerged as one of the most powerful and influential kingdoms in South Indian history. Established in the Deccan region, the empire became a major centre of political authority, trade, art, architecture and religious patronage. Its rulers played a significant role in preserving and promoting South India's cultural traditions.
Harihara II (1377–1404 CE), the third ruler of the Sangama dynasty, succeeded his father, Bukka Raya I. During his reign, the Vijayanagara Empire expanded its territories and strengthened its political and economic influence across southern India. He extended his authority over important regions of the Deccan and the eastern and western coastal territories. His reign also witnessed the development of trade and commerce, contributing to the growing prosperity of the empire.
Harihara II was a patron of Hindu religious institutions and supported temple construction and renovation. His coinage reflects the religious beliefs, royal authority and artistic traditions of the period.
The featured gold coin is a Half Varaha, also known as a Hon, weighing 1.71 g, issued during the reign of Harihara II.
The obverse depicts Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi seated together, symbolising divine prosperity, protection and auspiciousness. The reverse bears the Devanagari inscription “Sri Pratapa Harihara”, identifying the ruler and celebrating his royal prestige and authority.
This exquisite gold coin beautifully connects the festive spirit of Diwali with the religious symbolism and remarkable numismatic legacy of the Vijayanagara Empire.
