Ghiyath Shah as Sultan

2025-10-17 Fri

After ascending the throne of the Malwa Sultanate, Ghiyath Shah issued circular coins early in his reign, transitioning to square coins later in his reign. Circular coins from his reign are scarcer than square ones.

As the Sultan of Malwa, he issued coins in gold, silver, and copper. Gold circular coins were round from AH 873 to 878, after which all gold coins were square.

In the initial years, the coin legends bore resemblance to those of the Heir Apparent. In the first type, the word "Ahd" was omitted, and in the subsequent issue, the word "wali" was omitted. With the square coins, he introduced a new legend: "Al-Wathiq bi'l Malik Al-Multaji Abul Fath Ghiyath Shah Bin Mahmud Shah Al-Khalji Al-Sultan Khallada Malkahu."
