Tipu Sultan and His Coinage - 3
2025-05-05 Mon
Tipu Sultan, the King of Mysore, introduced several administrative reforms, reflected in his innovative coinage.Initially, his coins used the AH (Anno Hijri) dating system, which he replaced with the AM (Mauludi era) in the fifth year of his reign.
Coins issued by Tipu Sultan in the Maludi year 1224 feature the letter 'Alif.' In 1225, they displayed the letter 'Be,' followed by the letter 'Te' in 1226, and the letter 'Sa' in 1227.
The reverse side of the coins features the mint's name. Both obverse and reverse have double-lined circles containing a row of dots.
Some coins issued by Tipu Sultan lack dates. The obverse of these coins features an elephant, while the reverse is inscribed with the mint name.
