In the olden days, mosques played important roles in elementary education and advanced training in religion. In recent times, they have preserved their role as places of religious instruction and debate. In Central Asia, Mosque was built over burial places of Sufi saints and later, it turned into a pilgrimage place. The five pillars of Islam to be practiced by Muslims are Muslim life, prayer, concern for the needy, self-purification, and the Haj pilgrimage.
A mosque is a worshipping place for Muslims. The architectural plan of the mosque is usually square or rectangular with an enclosed courtyard. Women pray in a separate prayer hall called maqfil. Another important aspect is the mihrab which is a semicircular niche in the wall of a mosque. The dome is placed above the main prayer hall. It signifies the vaults of heaven and sky.
