Discovery of Brazil Commemorative Banknote

The Banco Central de Brasil issued a 10 Brazilian Real banknote in the year 2000. The banknote is a commemorative issue that celebrates 500 years of the discovery of Brazil. Brazil was officially "discovered" in 1500, when a fleet commanded by Portuguese diplomat Pedro Alvares Cabral, on its way to India, landed in Porto Seguro, between Salvador and Rio de Janeiro.The front of the banknote depicts Portuguese navigator and explorer Pedro Alvares Cabral who discovered Brazil on the 22nd of April 1500 along with the "Terra Brasilis" map, Part of Pero Vaz de Caminha's letter, and five caravels a 15th-century ships from Cabral's expedition.
The back of the banknote depicts the stylized version of the map of Brazil, formed by pictures. Some of them contain faces typical of the Brazilian people (Indian, white, black, and mestizo), portraying the ethnic and cultural plurality of contemporary Brazil.
