2022-06-16 Thu
In 1222, King Andrew II of Hungary signed what has become known as the “Golden Bull.” It was a charter granted by the king to codify the rights and privileges of the nobility and clergy and to establish limits on his own power. The edict is an exceptional reminiscence in the history of Hungarian law; it is the symbol of the Hungarian historic constitution. In 2022, Hungary issued a special gold coin to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the issuance of the Golden Bull.
The obverse of the coin is the modern representation of the coat of arms of Hungary, surrounded by a circular line. The edge of the obverse is the name of the country and the denomination with motifs comprised of dots and crosses.
The reverse of the coin features the modern representation of the king from the Golden Bull flanked by the years 1222 and 2022. On the edge of the reverse is a legend The Golden Bull of Andrew II of Hungary is featured and to the left is the master mark of applied artist Zoltán Endrody, who designed the coin.
