Kambar is also known as KavichakravarthyKamban was a medieval Tamil poet and author of Ramavataram. Ramavataram is also known as Kambaramayanam, the Tamil version of the epic Ramayana. He was a great scholar of both Tamil and Sanskrit—two of India's oldest and richest languages in terms of literary works. His other literary work in Tamil, are ThirukkaiVazhakkam, Erezhupathu, Silaiyezhupathu, KangaiPuranam, SadagoparAnthathi, and SaraswatiAnthathi.Kambar was born in Therazhundur to a wealthy farmer named SadaiyepaVallal. He grew up under the rule of the Chola Empire during the reign of Kulothunga III. When king Kulothunga III, heard about his talent, he called him to his court and honored him with the title KaviChakravarty.
