2016-07-05 Tue
An official 50p coin to boost the morale of Great Britain’s Olympic team, headed for Rio Olympics 2016 was designed by Bold Street, Liverpool -based design and innovation agency named Uniform.Royal Mint coin depicts a swimmer performing a butterfly stroke, the Olympic rings and the inscription ‘Team GB’.
The design is inspired from the poem “The Champions Story”, written by East London schoolgirl Fope Jegede during London 2012. The poem talks about a fictional girl athlete who is motivated by great British role models.
As per the designers, The Rio 2016 Olympics 50p coin had to represent the “hope and ambition” that UK experienced during the London 2012 Olympics. This is portrayed by The Union Jack that is shown around the energetic athlete whose physique is sculpted with a lot of detailing. The design process for the new coin is very different from most projects undertaken by the company Uniform. Space on the coin is intelligently used to showcase a clear and impactful imagery.
