Hyder Ali Silver Rupee Sold For INR 200000

Hyder Ali was the sultan of Mysore; he ruled Mysore between, 1761 to 1782. Hyder Ali was the father of famous ruler ‘Tipu Sultan’ also known as ‘Tiger of Mysore’.

Hyder Ali started his career as a commander in Chief of Mysore during the reign of KrishnarajaWodeyar II. He soon became the de-facto ruler of the Mysore kingdom. He conquered Bednore, Sandra, Sira, Canara, and Guti. Haider Ali had fought very hard against the military advances of the British East India Company in the first and second Anglo Mysore War.

This silver rupee that weighs around 11.45g, minted in Haidernagar, was issued by Hyder Ali during his rule in Mysore. This silver rupee was issued in the name of Mugal Emperor Shah Alam II. The obverse of this coin is inscribed with the name and title of Shah Alam II and Hijri year 1194. The reverse of this coin is inscribed with the mint name Haidernagar and the RY year 17.

This silver rupee is sold for INR 200000 in an auction of Oswal Antiques held in Kolkatta on 25th December 2021.
