On June 25th, veteran numismatist and the founder of Numismatic News and Krause Publications passed away at the age of 92. The publication started off as a one-page newspaper from his home in Iola. It suddenly became very popular as readership grew. Slowly he became a noted personality in the field of paper money, world coins and coin pricing. He later published books like the Standard Catalogue of World Paper Money and Standard Catalog of World Coins. He was a member of the ANA Numismatic Hall-of-Fame and received several prestigious awards like the Medal of Merit, Glenn Smedley Memorial Award (1991), Exemplary Service Award, Numismatist of the Year (1999), Lifetime Achievement Award, the Burnett Anderson Memorial Award (2009) and the Farran Zerbe Memorial Award for Distinguished Service (1977).
He was elected to the ANA Board of Governors in 2007 and re-elected in 2009. Mr. Krause could not carry on serving that position due to health problems in 2010.
He collected several Canadian coins, obsolete and national banknotes, especially the Wisconsin issues. This collection of notes was considered to be the most extensive one formed on a single state.
He also wrote about sports cards, records, comics, guns, stamps, collector automobiles, military vehicles and more. He had served as an auto mechanic with the 565th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion during World War II which is why he loved writing about military vehicles as well.
He slowly started stepping down from his responsibilities at Krause Publications in 1990. In 2008, his autobiography named “I'm Chet” was released. He supported many fund raising campaigns for local Lion's Club, Wisconsin Lion's Camp and Bart Starr's Rawhide Boy's Ranch.
Krause Publications was acquired by F+W Media in 2002.
