A famous Japanese dog Hachiko, is featured on a 2016 silver dollar from Niue. Hachiko was born on 10th November 1923 and was adopted by a professor named Hidesaburo Ueno in 1924.

Loyal Hachiko greeted his master everyday at Shibuya Station in Tokyo until May 1925. After that fateful day, the professor did not return as he succumbed to sudden death. For the next nine years, Hachiko waited each day for the professor at the station. His wait had to end some day and this adorable dog lived his last day on 8th March, 1935 and passed away near Shibuya Station, hoping for his master to return till his last breath.

Hachiko’s faithfulness became a symbol of loyalty in Japan. He became world famous and his story was featured on many articles and movies. A bronze statue of Hachiko was built at the Shibuya Station. The death anniversary of Hachiko is observed every year by hundreds of dog lovers.

The mintage of the coin is limited to 2,500 pieces and they cost $79.95 each.
