Charity Can Begin At a Coin Shop Too
2016-06-22 Wed
82-year-old Billy Denney from Upper Achintore, Fort William has raised £24,000 by selling coin cards over the last 27 years. He recently received the Cancer Research UK’s Flame of Hope award for all his noble contributions. Before he started working for the local coin shop, he served at the pulp mill in Corpach till it was shut down and he was asked to leave. He observed that many old coins were donated to charity. He started cleaning them and mounting 8 coins on a white card. He has made and sold 25,000 sets like these for 95p each, after writing the country and the date on the card. After getting impressed by his work, his area supervisor started collecting loose coins from the charity’s other shops in the north and handing it over to Mr Denney.
He said that though it is getting more and more difficult to find these coins because of the Euro, he will continue doing it as long as he can.
Mr Denney said that he really loves what he does, meeting people, locals and tourists from different countries, more importantly doing something for a charitable cause.
