Yoga, a discipline which finds its roots in the Vedic philosophy, is being celebrated all over the world today!On 11th December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21st June as the International Yoga Day. The date was suggested by our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in his address during the opening of the 69th session of the UN’s General Assembly as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares special significance in many parts of the world.
In 2016, hundreds and thousands of people across the world bent and stretched as part of yoga exercises for the second International Yoga Day celebrations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took part in a mass yoga demonstration at the Capitol Complex in Chandigarh. President Pranab Mukherjee also participated in a yoga demonstration at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
On the eve of the second International Yoga Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released commemorative miniature sheet consisting of twelve stamps on Surya Namaskar and First Day Cover in New Delhi. Among the twelve, six stamps have a value of five rupees, and the other six are valued at twenty-five rupees.
The twelve stamps feature all the twelve Asanas that make up the Surya Namaskar. The Surya Namaskar welcomes a new day and when performed in a sequence; it awakens different levels of awareness within us.
Further a block of four Yoga definitive stamps was released earlier. This 25 paise 11th series definitive stamp depicts a yogi in a meditative pose.
