Spink’s Next London Auction to Host Rare English Coins
                           2016-06-18 Sat
Part 2 of Spink’s London auction will be held on 28th June 2016 and will sell pennies, fractions along with their Irish coins and Continental imitations. Most of them are prized possessions of noted collectors. For anybody who is into collecting medieval English pennies, this sale would be highly informative and educational. The lot consists of pennies belonging to many Kings from Henry II to Edward II, in all types of conditions and variations, out of which a London Mint Edward I (1279-1307) is an extremely rare coin. Another rare one offered at the auction is a Wilton Mint Henry II (1154-1189), 'Short Cross' penny ca. 1180-89, minted in Wilton. A fire broke out at the Winchester mint in July 1180 after which it was shifted to on a temporary basis to Wilton. Hence these coins were struck from Winchester mint dies and the last letter of the mint signature changed from N to L on the reverse.
The collection is truly impressive and officials have stated that it would be very difficult for an amateur collector to own something like this.
