Royal Mint Goes Creative to Feature Trafalgar Square on Latest £100 Coins

Artists need time and space to render their deep thoughts into creations of art like music, paintings, poems or anything for that matter. Developing a design for coins is also an art that generally goes unnoticed. The Royal Mint went an extra mile to inspire their designers to come up with a new design for its latest £100 silver coins that is priced as much as its face value.Designers Glyn Davies and Laura Clancy took an official stroll to the Trafalgar Square, which was to be depicted on the new coin. This trip gave them a vivid perspective about the magnificence of this popular monument as visitors flocked in to enjoy their time at the London site.
Inspired by what they saw and sketched at the site, the new designs for the reverse of the coin took shape. The design depicted one of Edwin Landseer’s lions in the foreground with Nelson’s Column in distance, which beautifully projected the depth and scale of the famous Trafalgar Square sculpture. Almost like showcasing a point-of-view interpretation of a visitor at this world-famous landmark.
Unlike the traditional plaster, the design was prepared on clay to give it a more fluid- sketch like appearance. A peculiar texture was given, creating a realistic mood of the weather. The designers thought out-of-the-box for completing their outstanding piece of art.
The Trafalgar Square 2-ounce .999 fine silver coin in Brilliant Uncirculated ‘mint condition’ finish is a collectable item with a mintage limit of 45,000 pieces.
