Numismatist Shares His Experience at CSNS April Show

Coin Lore, a noted numismatist, shared his experiences after attending the Central States Numismatic Society convention that was held in April.Firstly he got a chance to take a look at fake coins that were made by making a hole in a coin and placing a new obverse or reverse in the hole, just inside the rim. After looking at the AM in AMERICA on the obverse rim closely, he saw some extremely thin scuff marks, exactly where the field meets the raised rim.
Randy Campbell, Florida United Numismatists president spoke about the January 1980 FUN show which was a grand success. Bullion coins were suddenly in demand at that time, but after two weeks, the value fell down drastically.
Former American Numismatic Association President John Wilson was declared third in the Miscellaneous exhibit category at CSNS for a display of “Postage Stamp Scrip Notes.”
Before printed fractional currency was introduced, two businessmen created their own postal notes in 1862 using cards with stamps. They were circulated at the value of the stamps. The show displayed some of these rare notes like a July 4, 1862, issue from Newport, with 1- ,2- and 3-cent stamps and the mark “V — United States Postage Stamps — 5 Cents.”
