Birsa Munda - the Unsung Hero of India

Birsa Munda – the lesser known freedom fighter of India died on 9th June 1900 fighting against the British. He is the unsung hero of India who took an active participation in the Freedom Struggle of India against.This tribal freedom fighter, religious leader and folk hero belonged to the Munda tribe of Jharkhand. The Munda tribe was an active part of the Freedom Struggle of India that rose in the tribal belt of modern-day Bihar and Jharkhand in the late 19th century.
Birsa Munda was a head of the tribe. He was a visionary who played a crucial role in liberation of his community. He started a fight against the dominance and the exploitation carried out by the British.
He started spreading awareness to expose the agenda of British and gathered his army of tribals. The army responded with movements and protests against the injustice and treachery of the British Raj.
Unfortunately, he was treacherously caught and imprisoned where he died mysteriously on 9th June 1900. His achievements are even more remarkable for having been accomplished before the age of 25.
India Post, remembering his valuable contribution to the freedom movement, issued a special commemorative stamp of Birsa Munda in 1988. The stamp with the value of INR0.60 features a portrait of this unsung hero of India.
