Copper Coin of Vijaynagar ruler Sadasiva Raya

Sadasiva Raya was the ruler of Vijaynagar Empire, one of the most powerful South Indian Empire of India based in Deccan in 16th century. The Vijaynagar dynasties ruled India for almost three centuries. This dynasty was founded by two rulers Harihara and Bukka of the Sangama Dynasty in the year 1336 CE.

Sadasiva Raya sat on the throne of Vijaynagar Empire in the year 1543 CE and ruled it until 1567 CE. Sadasiva Raya was the nephew of Achyuta Raya he sat on the throne of Vijaynagar Empire according to the law of Aliya Santana which was prevalent among the caste to which the Tuluva dynasty belonged. When Achyuta Raya died the year 1542 CE, his son Venkata I sat on the throne of Vijaynagar Empire. Venkata I was weak ruler and got killed within 6 month of reign. Later; Sadasiva Raya sat on the throne of Vijaynagar Empire and restore the Vijanagar Empire with his minister Rama Raya.

This copper coin that weighs around 8.80g was issued by king Sadasiva Raya during his rule in Vijaynagar Empire. The obverse of this coin depicts ‘Garuda facing with hands joined’. The reverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Devnagari legend’.
