Football Special Commemorative Coin for Charity

2016-06-03 Fri

They say money can’t buy everything but here’s a case that will prove this idiom wrong. Many commemorative coins have been issued all over the world to help raise funds for various charities. This time, the Royal Mint and the Football association came together to create a £5 coin celebrating the 50th anniversary of England’s Football World Cup win in 1966. This coin was used for the toss before the pre-Euro 2016 friendly match between England and Portugal that was played yesterday.

A portion of the sale’s revenue will be donated to the Bobby Moore Fund as well. Bobby Moore was termed as the greatest defenders of his times by iconic Pele. He also led Team England to beat Portugal 2-1 in the semis, then West Germany 4-2 in the finals and lift the World Cup in 1966. In 1993, this legendary footballer succumbed to bowel cancer and a charity was set up in his name which promotes and supports research into bowel cancer.

His widow Stephanie Moore was invited to The Royal Mint to strike the special £5 coin and was glad that such an initiative has been taken by the Royal Mint.
