Death Anniversary of a Bollywood legend - Raj Kapoor

Raj Kapoor aka "the greatest showman of Indian cinema", passed away on 2nd June 1988.

Raj Kapoor was a noted Indian film actor, producer, and director of Hindi cinema. He is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential film-makers and actors in the history of Indian cinema.

At the age of ten, he made his debut in the film "Inquilab". He has won 3 National Film Awards and 11 Film fare Awards in India. He was a two-time nominee for the Palme d'Or grand prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his films ‘Awaara’ and ‘Boot Polish’. In India, he is best known for his film "Mera Naam Joker".

In 1950, he established the RK Studios at Chembur near Bombay which went on to become one of the best in the country. In 1971 he was awarded the ‘Padma Bhushan’ for his contributions to arts. Raj Kapoor was also awarded the ‘Dadasaheb Phalke; Award, the highest ranking award in cinemas, in 1987 by the Government of India.

In 2001 Indian Post issued an INR 4 commemorative stamp I depicting the characters from his movies “Mera Naam Joker” and “Awaraa” along with his portrait.

Guinea in 2010 issued a commemorative depicting the scene from his celebrated film “Awaraa”.
